Coates is a master of his instrument, who had me transfixed for the duration of the performance.
This was virtuosity in the extreme – and he made it seem easy. He is, without a doubt,
someone who has a dazzling career ahead of him.
Carla Rees, review of Wigmore Concert, Jan 08 for MusicWeb International
Among the stand-out performers was Oliver Coates, a cellist with the London Sinfonietta,
who played electronically mangled yet attractively dissonant pieces.
The Times, review
of performance at Faster than Sound Festival, Aldeburgh 2008, (1/7/08)
Of an appearance at the Wigmore Hall, the composer Anthony Gilbert said:
This a was mind-blowing performance of 'Moonfaring'; masterly in every way: the sound-world and sound-range, the technique, the imagination, the understanding. Thank goodness there are players like you; who can turn crotchets and quavers into vibrant music.
